The rocks of this series form an interrupted belt along the southern border of the Highlands from Stonehaven on the east to the island of Arran on the west, and they appear again on a more extensive scale in Ireland. In Scotland the series consists of cherts or jaspers and shales, sometimes associated with limestones and with some peculiar igneous rocks. The age of the series has been for years a matter of controversy. Many geologists have held that these rocks are of pre-Cambrian age, but Messrs. Peach & Horne in their volume on The Silurian Rocks of Britain (Mem. Geol. Surv., 1899) remarked on the close resemblance of the rocks of this belt to some of the Arenig rocks in the Southern Uplands of Scotland, and the belt has been marked on the Geological Survey maps as doubtfully Lower Silurian.

The term “Hebrides” is of unknown origin. Some authorities suggest that it meant “the islands of Brude,” called after the names of several Pictish kings. There seems also to be considerable uncertainty about the name “Lewis.” Some derive it from “Leog,” a marsh. Macculloch traced it to “Loda,” a Scandinavian deity. The name has appeared in various forms, the earliest of which appears to be “Leodus.” Another suggestion is that it may be after “Leutha,” the last of the three Pictish kings who ruled in Orkney (Mackenzie, 1903, pp. xxxvi-xxxviii).

Harris is supposed to derive its name from the Gaelic “na hardibh,” a designation signifying “the heights.” The term is appropriate in that the most mountainous parts of the Long Island lie within its boundaries.
South Harris forms a natural geographical division for it is divided, from North Harris by a narrow neck of iand at Tarbert separating the eastern from the western seas. This isthmus is less than half a mile across. In addition to South Harris proper, this memoir deals also with the Isle of Scalpay and neighbouring islets off the north-east coast, the Isle of Taran-say on the north-west, and several islands off the south-west coast in the Sound of Harris, of which the principal ones are Ensay, Killegray, Groay, Lingay, and Gilsay.

The origin of the name “Uist” or “Vist” is uncertain. It is probably either of Pictish or Scandinavian derivation. It is said to be found amongst the names of the early Pictish kings. Some authorities give “Ivist” as the earliest known name, and this may mean “Ey-vist,” the Island of Vist (the Pictish king), or may be rendered literally from the Norse as “dwelling-place.” Others believe that the name is derived from “vest” (Danish) signifying “the west island.” Originally Uist comprised what we now know as North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist, and possibly Barra as well.

The Barra Isles are so designated after the largest member of the group, Barra or Barray. According to some authorities Barray is named after St Barr, who has always been regarded by the natives as the tutelary saint of the island and to whom the principal church is dedicated. A more probable derivation is that from its geographical position, i.e. from “Ay” or “I” (an island), and “Barr” (a head or point).

The Island of Iona, celebrated for its ecclesiastical remains and venerated as the centre of St Columba's activities and as the cradle of Christianity in Scotland, is designated by various names. In Gaelic it is known as “Hy” or “I” (the Island), and has been termed also “Innis-nan-Druidneach” (the Island of the Druids), “I-Colm-Kill” (the Island of Colum of the Cell). The term “Iona” (or “Ioua”) was used by Adamnan in his Latin Life of St Columba, and was thought to be derived from the Hebrew “Ionah” (a dove). A more probable derivation is from the Irish “I-thon” (the Island of Waves).

Since the time when Agassiz and Buckland made known the former presence of glaciers in the mountain valleys of North Wales, much has been written concerning the glaciation of Snowdonia, but comparatively little attention has been given to that of Western Carnarvonshire. This part of the country stretches south-westwards as the broad promontory of Lleyn between Carnarvon Bay and Cardigan Bay. Western Carnarvonshire for the most part lay outside the paths followed by the native glaciers. None of the larger valleys of Snowdonia trend in this direction, and so the marks of recent glaciation are not so fresh and striking in this region as they are further east. Hitherto no one has attempted to give any detailed account of the Drift deposits over the whole of Lleyn, but various references to the glaciation of the region are found scattered in the literature dealing with the geology of Wales.

The area embraced in this paper consists of that part of Pembrokeshire which lies to the north and north-east of St Bride's Bay. Bounded on the west by St George's Channel and on the north by Cardigan Bay, it extends to the north-east as far as the mouth of the river Teifi, near Cardigan.
That part of the country which lies in the immediate neighbourhood of St David's has, through the laborious researches of the late Dr Hicks and others, become well-known to geologists, and may now be regarded as classic ground. The solid geology of this promontory has given rise to much discussion, and has, perhaps, attracted more attention than that of any other part of the Principality. The reason for this great interest is to be sought in the facts that the rocks of this area are of a very great antiquity, and that the sedimentary series contain the remains of some of the earliest organic forms yet found in the earth's crust, whilst the igneous rocks are also displayed in great abundance and variety, and present us, in the words of Sir Archibald Geikie, with “the oldest well-preserved record of volcanic action in Britain.”

The study of lakes has received more attention on the Continent than it has in our own country. The inland waters of France and Switzerland have been most carefully surveyed, and in America accurate soundings of many of the lakes have been made by the Geological Surveys. But until recent years this work has been almost altogether neglected in Britain; the Government had considered it to be outside the function of the Ordnance Survey, and though of importance to geological research, it has not been undertaken by the Geological Survey. The absence of adequate knowledge concerning the forms of the basins occupied by the lakes has been a serious obstacle to the geological inquiry as to the mode of origin of these basins. But recently, in the English Lake District and in Scotland, this obstacle has been removed to a great extent through the work of geographers, who have carried out a very complete bathymetrical survey of many of the lakes of those regions; and the importance of this work has been recognised by geologists. But in North Wales not only had no attempt been made to ascertain the configuration of the lake-beds, but in many cases even the depths of the lakes remained unknown.
